PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the New Integrated Terminal Building of Veer Savarkar International Airport, Port Blair on 18th July via video conferencing. With a total built-up area of around 40,800 sqm., the new terminal building will be capable of handling about 50 lakh passengers annually.
An Apron suitable for two Boeing-767,400 and two Airbus-321 types of aircraft has also been constructed at Port Blair Airport at a cost of Rs 80 Crores, making the airport now suitable for parking of ten aircraft at a time.
The terminal building’s architectural design resembles a shell-shaped infrastructure depicting sea and islands. The building will be equipped with 28 check-in counters, three passenger boarding bridges and four conveyor belts.
- Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia will reach the airport at 9 am.
- The new integrated terminal building has been built at a cost of around Rs 710 crore in an area of 40837 Sqm.
- The airport in Port Blair is named after the freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, also known as Veer Savarkar.
The event was organized in hybrid mode. Prime Minister inaugurated the terminal building by pressing a remote button through video conferencing and other dignitaries were present at the airport.
As a tribute to the great freedom fighter, Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia along with MoS Gen. Vijay Kumar (Rtd.) and other dignitaries unveiled statue of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (Veer Savarkar) inside the premises of the airport.
